Remember Republicans? Sober men in suits, pipes, who’d nod thoughtfully over their latest tract on market-driven fiscal conservatism while grinding out the numbers on rocket science. Sure they were a bummer, maaaaan, but on the way to La Revolution you need somebody to remember where you parked the car. I was never one (nor a Democrat, really, more an agnostic libertarian big on the social contract, but we don’t have a party …), but I genuinely liked them.

The Barrister lives not far from California’s GOP core, or what used to be the core. Then his Republicans start talking about the way things are today and they get nasty. The tag of self-identified “Disgruntled Republican” is spreading faster than mono in a sorority house. Apparently something happened on the way to a Bush Whitehouse: the DC-GOP is more at home in the land of meth labs and Christian AM radio than billionare mansions.
