It is being reposted for the benefit of California Kossacks trying to make sense of the June 6 Election.<\/em>The three arguments I&#8217;ve read against <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartvoter.org\/2006\/06\/06\/ca\/state\/prop\/81\/\">Prop 81<\/a> were all too emotional for me to accept, they sounded like nativist\/Right Wing AM radio. I don&#8217;t have to ditto Bill O&#8217;Reilly to be a fiscal conservative. So here&#8217;s <strong>why I&#8217;m opposed to Prop 81<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>The state will sell $600 million dollars in bonds, it will cost &#8220;about $1.2 billion&#8221; to pay those bonds back. We will have to pay <em>$570 million<\/em> in interest.<\/p>\n<p>The money is to be granted to local agencies for library infrastructure. A local agency must spend 35% on &#8220;construction and renovation of public library facilities&#8221; in order to get access to the $600 million.<\/p>\n<p>Now, it seems to me we&#8217;re cutting hours at libraries, not planning to build new ones. Why should we borrow money and pay interest, just to <em>qualify<\/em> to borrow more money for something we won&#8217;t build? (At least not in our city&#8230;)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Arguments FOR Prop 81: &#8220;Previously approved projects&#8230; are targeted for priority funding&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s just swell: Ask the whole state  to borrow money  to subsidize pre-approved construction projects without telling us where they are. I&#8217;ll go on record as saying I&#8217;m opposed to pork-barrel propositions, on principle.<\/p>\n<p>As usual: Open to correction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following was posted to LongBeachPolitics.org on 05\/14\/2006.
